I’ve been thinking a lot about my program, The Guilty Robot Broadcast (runs 1PM – 4PM Eastern) and I feel like I need a format change. I realize that this is only going to be the fifth installment of the show, but I am concerned that I am not giving my listeners what they need and I am not playing enough of my favorite kinds of music.
Previously my format was to play whatever I felt like playing of music that I enjoy but I felt compelled to play mostly hard rock and heavy metal. I would try to slip in non-heavy tunes and guilty pleasures, but I realized that I was playing less of the music that I really like and more music that I USED to like. That’s not to say that i don’t still enjoy and cherish heavy music, but there is a whole other side to my tastes that I am not sharing with you.
I also feel like it is disruptive for my listeners to jump all over the place with musical styles. To go from Slayer to Miley Cyrus, or from Disturbed to Toy-Box puts my listeners in a position where they have to listen to a lot of music that they might not enjoy to listen to a few things they might. So I have decided to organize better and let listeners hear what they want.
My new format will play a different kind of music every hour. It may change from week to week, but for the most part, the different kinds/categories will be:
Heavy Metal – Any type of heavy metal. My favorites in this category and Symphonic Metal and Power Metal, but I also love classic heavy metal. You’ll hear things like Dragonforce, Nightwish, Iron Maiden, Dio, Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax, Hammerfall, Krypteria, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold and more. I am not a big fan of Death Metal and other grind metals (aka Cookie Monster Rock) so you will not hear much of that.
Modern Hard Rock – I love a lot of the new modern hard rock that I am hearing. I listen to it a lot while I am coding. You’ll hear things like Flyleaf, Trapt, Rise Against, Skillet, Breaking Benjamin, Paramore, Fireflight, and more.
Goth – I enjoy Gothic music, but I am not an expert. I would love to hear feedback on other bands to try out. What I like is The Crüxshadows, Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend, Field of Nephilim, Deathstars, Miranda Sex Garden, Nosferatu, Rosetta Stone, and This Mortal Coil
Industrial – I’ve been a fan of industrial music since I first heard Ministry and Nine Inch Nails 20 years ago. Hard beats and lots of distortion are my favorites. You’ll hear things like Ministry, KMFDM, MDFMK, Lard, Boris Mikulic, Front Line Assembly, The Revolting Cocks, Nine Inch Nails, Gravity Kills, Skinny Puppy, Die Form, Xorcist, Leæther Strip, and Pigface
Techno/Pop/Dance – This is the category I am least versed in. I am relatively new to Dance music (probably because I don’t dance). I enjoy some pop music, but usually only from female singers. Techno is fun. Things that you’re hear include The Rednex, Psykosonik, Kraftwerk, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Girls Aloud, No Doubt, Daft Punk, Drexciya, Toy-Box, Aqua and more. Where possibly I will probably play dance remixes of pop songs
Jason’s Angels (or Heavenly Voices) – This is a category that will be reserved for my favorite kind of music. And that is music with female singers. There is little I like more than a beautiful female voice. In this category you’ll hear nothing but female voice. There will be some overlap in the artists I play from other categories. You’ll hear Paramore, Nightwish, Tarja, Mariah Carey, Heather Nova, Die Form, Emilie Autumn, Flyleaf, Portishead, Björk, Tori Amos, Within Temptation, Xandria, Leaves Eyes, Lacuna Coil, Epica, and more, more, more.
I welcome any feedback or comments on this. I will try to announce which categories I will be playing for each hour so you can tune in when you want to (Bob says he can’t tolerate anymore Industrial music).
Thanks for listening
